The common phrase: “do you live under a rock”, is often meant to incite shame and ridicule – “like, where have you been for the past few years?!” However, in the small town of Setenil de las Bodegas, Spain, there are around 3000 inhabitants who “literally” live under a rock! The town, situated in the Cádiz province of Spain, was previously home to individuals who chose to settle here for practical reasons a few hundred years ago.
The natural caves that call Setenil home turned out to provide the perfect living quarters. Rather than build entire houses, inhabitants of the time were able to use the caves to keep the heat at bay during the summer and the cold during the winter, all they needed to build was a façade. People have apparently been living here since pre-historic times – how cool? The images of this quaint town are also mind-blowing!
