The elegance of the violin and the heavenly sounds of the harp are not enough to produce a truly terrifying soundtrack perfect for horror films. This seemed to be the problem for movie composer Mark Korven who wanted to create the perfect sounds; sounds that were terrifying.
Unfortunately, no instruments like this exist and Korven became tired of using digital sampling. In that case, what is a music composer supposed to do other than creating his own instrument? To produce original effects that are sure to haunt your nightmares, Korven teamed up with guitar maker Tony Duggan-Smith to create a one of a kind instrument with the sole purpose of invoking fear and horror.
The instrument has been christened, “The Apprehension Engine” and features numerous mechanical parts that managed to manufacture the sound of horror and suspense. The Apprehension Engine is meant to express emotions that most instruments can’t capture, triggering fear with intense sonic sounds.
“A normal instrument, you are playing it and expecting it to have a sound that is pleasing,” said Korven to Great Big Story, “but with an instrument like this, the goal is to produce sounds, that in this case, are disturbing.”
